This shot was take on at the Neon Boneyard in Downtown Las Vegas . I used a canon T2i with a outfit lens system . It was taken in Raw and touched up in Lightroom . There are so many neon signs in Las Vegas but I pass this one everyday and always wanted a picture of it and this competition got me out there .

Dizzy Duffy ’s
This revolving sign belong to a hamburger joint near where I last . I thought it might be fun to experiment with recollective exposures . The revolving fortune of the signal reads “ Duffy ’s ” and is colored red on one side and puritanic on the other . Once I was satisfied with the exposure , it get me several attempt to clock the shutter ’s release to the spot in the sign ’s revolution that produced the most desirable color practice . I at last settled on a 10 2nd exposure , f/36 , and an ISO of 200 . It was shoot on a Canon 60D.

Another Second Saturday deliver to the Wynwood Art District of Miami . In this up and coming Art Hub which has not yet fully defined its character , multitudes of hoi polloi flock every second Saturday of the calendar month to check out the late exhibits in a very unlikely part of town . Overtown — a place which is undergoing gentrification and is now dubbed Wynwood . skirt soup shelter and homeless in cardboard boxes , art , artist , hipster , and poser congregate to gape and barrack at all sorts of art from street performers to bonafide sculptors , painter , and a lensman or two ; not unlike yours truly . In this scene , you may take in a typical street - side scene of Panther Coffee , one of the better known chill - out spots with its omnipresent logo done - up in Neon . While the designation called for a signaling , I felt that the most accurate direction to impersonate it is with the gang that it draws beneath it . The image was taken handwriting admit in aperture priority at 1/50 sec f/1.8 ISO 1250 on a 50 millimetre ( 75 equiv ) Nikon D5000 . It was processed in Lightroom 4 .

My full cousin Alicia and I had been ride around for a couple of hours looking for an erstwhile sign . We first went to a localisation that was a known speakeasy during prohibition , which had an interesting Ne pointer that read “ Whiskey ” . When we found out it was plough off , we started our journey to find a refilling . Finally , on the style back through townspeople , Alicia notice that there was a minuscule diner with a bunch of house turned inward . Although they were all fairly modern and of mainstream mark , she though it would make for an interesting crack when shot from the rear end , so I congeal my tiny tripod on top of their sum stag party , and snap a few nip . I liked this one because of the amount of light source leak through the tube-shaped structure . As you say … it ’s a lost art , and I like the enshroud contingent behind how things are made . I used a nikon D7100 with the Zeiss 135 mm F2.0 lens . I really put the tv camera in phosphorus mode and let it break up the options except that I had set the aperture at 2.0 . I drove around my belittled town last Nox , really not certain if I would find a lot of atomic number 10 star sign or not since most sentence I call back that they are really “ background ” noise to what I normally see . But , since I wanted to enter this challenge , I take the time to look for signs and surprisingly found several interesting signs besides the I that merely said”open ” . I cipher that would be too coarse position . So I found two I care a raft , one which was a salon sign with nothing but the neon in a moody windowpane , but I choose the below sign since it was interesting to have both the neon in the windowpane and then the backdrop of the Chinese menu on the bulwark in an out of focus fashion behind the neon .

No(rwalk ) Attractions
I do n’t have a overnice television camera , but I do have a give up - ass atomic number 10 sign . This is the Norwalk Theatre , in Norwalk , Ohio , which my married woman and I bought last July . It ’s a 1941 Art Deco theatre ( one of the last of its kind ) , and it has the largest marquee in Ohio . I ’ve spent the last several month bringing this sign back to life with several new neon transformers , chaser motor repair , and 500 + new clean lightbulb . I hope you care it , because this erstwhile gentlewoman deserves some attention ! This weekend was the annual carnival near our local shopping centre . I went at night to get some long exposure of the the ferris wheel and various other rides . I was surprised to find that there is very little Ne at carnival . Luckily , I did come across this snack stand with the needful neon letter . I like the effect from the lens rapid climb . Naked Neon
As soon as the competition was announced I knew I had to take a pic of Portland ’s iconic neon mansion . To the great timing of the contest Portland had an iconic upshot occur that decease right in front of the polarity , being the World Naked Bike Ride . The bike ride went on for over an minute and a one-half , which gave me more than enough prison term to try a lot of television camera configurations . I did n’t want to have crisp movie of the riders ( did n’t want to find like the creep taking delineation of the au naturel multitude , though that was ineluctable ) . In Austin , South Congress St. and South 1st St. are lined with shops and restaurants , yield them a very retro feeling at Nox . It was the first topographic point I thought to go when I saw this challenge . I had one restaurant sign in particular I wanted to shoot , but on my manner there , I happened to drive by an honest-to-god house converted into a small art gallery of sort that was full of old neon signs . This is only a small-scale sampling of what was on display . Because it was belated and the gallery was n’t open , it was difficult to encounter a full slant through the windows , but that did n’t contain me from creeping around the building seek to get the best shot . This dig is of the Homeslice Pizza man who constitute Homeslice Pizza and More Homeslice Pizza , two bustling pizza shops on South Congress Avenue in Austin , TX . I shot a lot of the wonderful signs in townsfolk , but I really liked the demarcation between the festive pizza manufacturing business sign and the white traffic light pole extend into idle words . It put the sign into its own context of use and helped me to see it is a separate entity , rather than as part of the colorful intermixture that make Congress Avenue such a vibrant place to be . I was shooting with a protagonist and point out that many of the signs in south Austin have beautiful reflections on the big back windows of the SUV that are often parked just outside of the business . take care into the windows generate one the impression of peer into an alternate domain with only neon signs . The Story .. Well if nothing becomes of this entry at least I now have a beautiful gallery of well-lighted imagination . My husband and I make up one’s mind to take vantage of the beautiful atmospheric condition . So we start on the Neon journeying drive around town looking for the perfect sign of the zodiac . What I did n’t expect was to find Neon sign everywhere . Every route we turned down and in every store front some kind of Neon . From one mark to another we were hoping to not get chivvy by constabulary or security , the endangerment of getting caught .. And then we landed on the “ DOORS ” sign . With a threshold being the symbol of many things in aliveness , an opening to a new beginning or a close to something stop . It just seemed to be the unadulterated one . This shooting challenge gave me a reason to lastly venture out for a photo school term . This pic was shot with my Sony NEX-5R. ISO 1600 , 18 millimetre ( Sony 10 - 18 mm lens ) , f/4.0 , 1/100 second . thorium photo has very small processing done in LR4 . All I did was center it , lightly taper , and employ a bit of noise reduction . Nothing else was adjust . To get this shot I placed my photographic camera on a full hold out tripod , fix it to a 10 second timekeeper , and repeatedly hold the camera over my head so that it was level with the sign , which was approximately 12 foot from the earth . I had to take numerous shots since there were a couple factors at body of work . First , it was n’t easy holding the tripod firm over my head . A bunch of the shots had motility blur . secondly , the sign was wink on and off so out of the few shots that come out reasonably keen , one-half did n’t have the center light up up or were crocked , off centre , etc . This is the preindication for a restaurant in Seattle called Cyclops . Pretty cool .
