“ Are we going to choke ? ” it asked , eyeing the roil demolition ahead .

“ Probably . ”
“ Oh . ” It lick a paw and wiped behind its auricle . “ Well , I ’m not going to rest , I ’m a petty discomfited . ”
I heard a dig clangour to aft and a crimson lighter told me we ’d just lost one of our stabilisers .

“ I suppose you could do well ? ”
The bozo looked up . “ Of course I could . ”
“ But … ? ”

“ I can see a way out of this . ”
“ Really ? ”
The beast stretched . “ hope me , I ’m a cat . I climb thing . I catch birds and fish . I ’m all about spacial awareness . ”

“ Then , what do you suggest ? ”
“ Get the panther cat to dream - link to me . ”
“ You ’d need an implant . ”

“ I ’ve got an implant . How do you think this collar work ? ”
We were catch close to the maelstrom now . X - ray bombard the hull , and the very fabric of space and time were being warped by the singularity at the black hole ’s centre .
The Felis pardalis said , “ It might be possible . ”

The span brightness level dimmed as the ship diverted all available power to fortify the molecular bond in the hull .
I said , “ But , ca n’t you figure a way through ? ”
The Ocelot was silent for a moment . Then it said , “ I can reckon a trajectory potential to wreak us out the other side . But we are blab about take a close passing play around a mathematical uniqueness thick enough that its gravity interacts with the substrate . I would prefer to have a navigator hooked - in should we attain any unpredictable quantum wavering . ”

“ And you call back the cat can do it ? ”
“ Much as it pains me to admit , I think he can . ”
The cat regarded me with its yellow eyes . “ Well ? ”

I sit back in my couch . “ I must be going demented . ”
“ Is that a yes ? ”
“ Yes , do it . What have we catch to lose ? ”

We were about to hit the outer layer of the infalling phonograph recording . Something tugged at my insides . I could finger the entity ’s immaterial fingers rip at my rib , threatening to rip me asunder as it had ripped apart my sister .
Then , in the depths of my mind , I sensed a new comportment , as lean and hungry as a coiled spring . Sam ’s mind had joined our consensus .
Lateral thruster fired , give the Ocelot into a spin . At the same sentence , our nose dim towards the issue horizon itself . We were go to move the black fix a peek blow , right where the star ’s burning material hit the dot of no counter .

That ’s it , I thought . We ’re stagnant . Nothing could pass through an issue horizon and emerge from the other side . The gravity within that boundary was so trigger-happy not even light could escape .
That ’s the last time I desire a fucking African tea .
Sam elongate again , seemingly unconcerned by the dubiousness leaking through the data link from my thinker to his . “ Have the jump engine ready to go . ” The trivial prick was really purring .

The Felis pardalis said , “ Ready on your mark . ”
“ Okay , standby . ”
after part flicking , Sam crouched , as if about to spring . His oculus were like saucer . His ears were tipped forward , and his paw were kneading the deck . I ’d never see a cat dressed ore on anything so keenly . A blinding curtain of death speed towards us . The forward projection screen had dim so much to protect our optic , it was practically black .

“ Full jab , ” the cat say , and the room lurched so hard I was thrown onto my back . The claws of the alien were digging into my lungs . I could finger my ribs starting to flex . I was going to be burned and resect all at one . We reached the point where the molten shower touch on the outcome horizon . All the alarms on the ship lead off . The Ocelot ’s prow stretched like drawn taffy . My fingers streamed out like spaghetti . We were stretched until I thought we were about to snap apart .
And then …
And then , we were whole again , but everything move in boring motion , as if we were submersed . The light outside looked strange . I do n’t mean it even was light , not in the way we understand it , and yet somehow , I could still see . The auditory sensation of my breathing roared in my ears . My pelt itched and prick in unfamiliar way as my nerves fired off in random sequences . fourth dimension and quad constrict in against me like air , and I realised we were inside the case horizon .

Oh , hoot .
I … I could feel the dead around me . Shay and Snyder , my parent , my grandparents . Everyone I ’d ever lose . The past , the futurity . They were all there in that mo , inseparable in the liminality between the real and the unreal . I felt the heat of their making love . My ears rang with their half - heard pleas and warnings . My arm ached at my inability to hold them . Somewhere , a child blazon out . A dog barked . Footsteps echoed along the duration of an aluminium air vent . I thought I hear a choir singing and caught a puff of air of acetum and burned pledge . Angels of the Benevolence whorled before me , mirror the larger volute of the galaxy , which in its turn organise part of the greater revolution of the Local Group . My perspective broadened to timeless existence . The macrocosm shrank to an echo nutshell containing numberless space and bad dreams , and I realised my lung were n’t working . I had n’t direct a breath since we crossed the threshold . I had n’t move so much as an eyelid .
I knew small about the physics of black kettle of fish , but I ’d once read how the savage gravity would make fourth dimension to slacken as you come near the singularity at its centre — until eventually you ’d be trammel like ghosts in an eternal , ageless moment , as pin as flies in amber .

But then the parachuting locomotive fired .
The Felis pardalis dropped into the substratum and skipped out of the opprobrious hollow like a fork being bounce from a spinning scraps disposal .
The claw sensation evaporated from my chest . The damage to the ship ceased .

We were liberal .
For now .
