Last calendar month inTokyo , Toho Studios opened its door to the assembled press , providing a rare look atGodzillaprops of yore . We got an up - secretive and personal look at some of the cool kaiju around — and the city they ’ve destroyed over the years — and we ’ve got the picture to turn up it !
Toho ’s Toshifumi Shimizu and Kohei Umino , whose actual prescribed job title is “ Godzilla Specialist , ” supply a guided tour and shed light on the futurity of Toho ’s kaiju movies .
“ The buildings in front are larger than the ones in the back , which are little to create more perspective , ” explained Shimizu , who crop as the assistant director during the Millenium Godzilla serial . A whole metropolis sprawled before us . minor edifice . Tiny cars . Cute lilliputian trees . The realism is stupefying , and I just want to hop-skip on the stage and stomp all over the place . I did not , of course . A Rodan suit , arms spread , from the 2004 film Godzilla Final Wars loomed overhead , staring down a King Ghidorah courtship from 2001 ’s Godzilla , Mothra and King Ghidorah : Giant demon All - Out Attack .

“ This is the oldest existing Godzilla suit , ” said Shimizu , gesture to a suit used in both 1994 ’s Godzilla Vs . Space Godzilla and 1995 ’s Godzilla Vs . Destroyah . The suit was painted blood-red for the second film , but since the design is a devotee front-runner , it has since been repainted black . “ This is quite a heavy suit , ” explain Shimizu . “ Normally , the lawsuit is made entirely from rubber , but in order of magnitude to light it up in red ink , the wooing ’s torso area was also made from plastic . ”
“ With the gumshoe and the heavier charge plate plus the Light and equipment for the dope the courting breathe , it matter 100 kilograms . It was quite heavy . ”
According to Shimizu , Godzilla suits typically count around 130 pounds . However , the one from Godzilla Vs . Destroyah weighed 220 pounds , which assign it up there with the very first 1954 suit for the heaviest Godzilla suit of clothes . “ The courtship actor had a tough time . ”

Kohei Umino discusses Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, the 1964 film featuring a Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra team-up.
As Umino explained , a suit worker could mislay a liter of sweat during a day ’s piece of work . “ One wooing actor played King Ghidorah , and it was so unmanageable that the doer could only do inadequate takes , ” says Umino , who taper out the wires holding up the monster ’s head like a puppet . “ As you could see , we used wires , but in the movies , you could not see them . We did n’t erase them with CG , which demonstrate how advanced our filmmaking technique were . ” But some of those techniques are being lost . “ I opine if we did a King Ghidorah now , people would n’t know how to operate the wires . ”
The complicated puppetry used for this kaiju wooing has on the face of it not been handed down . But that ’s not the only affair that has been lost . There are Godzilla moving picture date back to the 1950s , but sure some of the iconic Godzilla suits from before the mid-1990s have outlast ? Why is the 1994 suit the onetime ? Rubber kaiju , Umino told me afterwards after I pulled him aside for a chat , start to demean after a few age .
The reason why the 1994 case is the quondam existing Godzilla lawsuit is that Toho antecedently did not meticulously preserve or store its archive . Instead , everything was just initially stuff under a ceiling and exposed to Japan ’s brutally hot summers . “ We did n’t keep archives at all in the beginning , ” said Umino . “ But after seeing that place like Warner Bros. do , we thought keeping archive was important and that we should , too . ”

The Godzilla in the background in the center is the current Godzilla: King of the Monsters design. Also, “please do not touch.”
Now , the Godzilla archives are cataloged and celebrate in temperature - controlled store in Holy Order to preserve them as long as potential . The rubber does still disgrace , but the coolheaded temperatures help slow that down . Toho also does care on the suits , such as repaint and patching surgical incision .
While the suits might not deem up well over time , Toho does still have props dating back to the original 1954 celluloid , with the oldest among them being the original Oxygen Destroyer . According to Toho , this is its most important Godzilla prop . The studio apartment does not bring it out on a regular basis and even many Toho employee have not see it firsthand .
Seeing all the airplane propeller images on presentation made me nostalgic for an geological era whenpractical effectsruled and reminded me of that meme image ofGeorge Lucassurrounded by Star Wars mannequin contrasted with him against a green screen .

King Ghidorah leaves a path of destruction.
“ International fans often get disordered when the Toho Godzilla movies do n’t boast a lawsuit actor , ” Umino told me . “ But for Shin Godzilla , the original plan was to practice both a hybrid CG and a suit doer . However , it was in the end decided that CG form best for that special picture . ”
Does that mean that all Toho Godzilla movies will be CG ? “ I call back for future Godzilla movies , whether we employ a crossbreed of suit acting and CG or just CG will be decided vitrine by typesetter’s case , ” he enunciate .
There are sign that Toho is readying its kaiju suit production team . “ Last year , we remade the original suit , ” Umino explain . This was done to celebrate the character ’s 64th anniversary , and the remade suit was record in Tokyo Midtown .

King Ghidorah’s heads were controlled like a marionette.
By Toho having its craftsman redo this iconic suit , the studio apartment is ensuring that the artistic custom that made Godzilla possible lives on . “ There are times that suit acting is best , such as the unexpected ways a edifice might be destroy . But with CG , ” Umino continue with a smile , “ you could well put those construction back together . ” Here are even more spirit at Toho ’s incredible Godzilla props , sets , and courting .
Getting an inside peep at Toho and checking out all these iconic Godzilla suits and airscrew was rightfully peculiar . Sadly , Toho does not put up tour for the universal public , but hopefully , we ’ll see more even more suits and sets in future plastic film .

This is the upper body Godzilla costume. Perhaps since Toho actually allowed visitors to put it on their head, the wear and tear are definitely more apparent. It shows how the rubber can degrade over time.
