You do n’t really think of piss nursing bottle rockets as being all that potent ; they ’re just a tyke ’s sport toy , right ? In the hands of researchers at the University of Cape Town they ’re not . They recentlyshattered the world book for a water bottleful launchby sending one soaring half a mile into the air .
The accurate height of the launch was 830 metre ( actually the mean altitude of two back - to - back flight ) which shatter the old record book of 623 metre set by a U.S. squad back in 2007 .
To clear up , there were no explosives or combustible fluids used to propel this rocket in any way . All it had onboard was H20 , air , and lots and lots of pressure level . The rocket towered just shy of nine - feet tall to maximise its payload capacity , but thanks to the utilization of carbon paper fiber it only weigh just over three pounds .

At launch the rocket farm some 1,200 pounds of thrust , enough to get a small car whole off the ground , and in less than half a second it contact a top speed of over 340 miles per time of day . In other words , even though it was powered by nothing but water pressure , it was far from being a child ’s play toy anymore . So how long will this track record stand ?
