Vawter’sprosthetic leg is deserving $ 8 million , weighs 10 British pound and apply two motor to power the knee and mortise joint separately . Amazingly , the limb uses point muscle reinnervation ( TMR ) to connect nerves sever during Vawter ’s accident to feasible sinew . In fact , nervus that would usually control his lower leg are rerouted to his hamstring : when he cerebrate about moving his lower leg , electric nervous impulse are fired to that muscle , and they ’re then converted into control signal in the bionic limb .
The event ? He can climb 103 floors of freakin ’ stair , in a meter most of us would be gallant of . He finished the mounting in just 53 hour 9 seconds , report AP , and looked pretty relaxed throughout .

While Vawter is heading back to his hometown of Yelm , Wash. , the limb will remain in Chicago . The researchers behind it , from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago , Vanderbilt University and MIT amongst others , still are n’t well-chosen with it . They go for to meliorate its execution yet further — but say that it will still be years before the tree branch hits grocery store .
