Isaac Asimov ’s originalFoundationtrilogy has welcome countless awards and congratulations since it was complete in 1953 , even winning the Hugo for “ Best All - Time Series . ” But what ’s drawn swot to the classicsci - fiseries over the decades is its visual sense , setting , and imagination , not particularly its whiz - bang action at law sequences . It ’s a tarradiddle about refinement , politics , and science , after all . It seems like Apple’sFoundation goggle box seriesmight think differently .
Hardcore sci - fi devotee probably need n’t worry ; as this new lagger display , it ’s still very clear about Hari Seldon , creator of psychohistory , a science that can foretell the future of civilization ( in wide strokes , at least)—specifically , the destruction of the astronomical imperium , which will throw humanity into a new dark geezerhood traverse 30,000 eld . luckily , Hari has a plan to reduce that number to 1,000 ; unfortunately , the emperor butterfly are n’t felicitous with anything that threatens their rule , even fact .
But that ’s all stuff we knew before . What seems to make this Foundation prevue unequaled is how much it emphasizes the empire ’s decline — the fighting , the gyration , and the wars that discombobulate the galaxy into pandemonium — which , of course , means a great mess of gunfighting and spaceships exploding . This trailer makes it extravagantly clear there are battle that break out on several planet , although whether these fights are against the imperium or if populations of planet are simply fighting each other as civilization falls aside is n’t clear . I ’d say a mixture of the two .

I do n’t begrudge Apple seek to convince people who are not sci - fi fans ( or sci - lover who have n’t show 70 - year - previous classic of the genre ) that Foundation is deserving checking out by promise them the laser blasts and distance explosions that they ’d await from a modern serial . I just worry a little about how much they might keep the science of this science fabrication story out of the show ’s limelight .
