It seems the masses of Australia have been jubilantly munching away on a metal money of fish unidentified to science . The new described species is a type of grouper and has been christenedEpinephelus fuscomarginatus .

Back in 2000 , Queensland Museum fish expertJeff Johnsonwas depict photographs of a mystery grouper by a fisherman . Despite seeing more images   over the geezerhood , he failed to get handgrip of any physical specimens , as they kept being trade for food . However , in 2017 , Johnson came across five of the creatures hold back to be sold at a fish market in Brisbane . He bought the Pisces and lay to work .

“ As soon as I visit them , I think they were probably a new species , so I purchased all five and began the hard work of formally proving they were a unexampled species , ” Johnson state in astatement .

“ Queensland Museum geneticist Dr Jessica Worthington Wilmer run some tests in Queensland Museum ’s molecular science laboratory and after compare them with other specimen in various museum collections , had enough grounds to prove it was a unexampled species .

“ I ’ve been severalize they are quite tasty , ” he lend .

The species is n’t that classifiable - looking , which probably explain why it slipped through the net income for so many geezerhood . It count pretty unremarkable , sharing similarities with othergroupersof the genusEpinephelus . What made it stand out to Johnson , however , was a deficiency of grading on its body and dark edges around some of its quintet – fuscomarginatusmeans “ dark - edged ” in Latin .

The raw grouper is a fairly big fish , measuring 70 centimetre ( 27 inches ) in length , and lives at depths of about 220 - 230 meters ( 720 - 755 feet ) off the central section of theGreat Barrier Reef . The investigator concluded it was a raw coinage by analyzing its DNA and compare it to the DNA of other alike species of Pisces the Fishes . The grouper is the 92nd   member of the genusEpinephelusand   is described in the journalZootaxa .

Strangely , this is n’t the first clip a new species has been place from a puppet destined to be someone ’s dinner . Back in 2011 , a new species of 90 - centimeter ( 3 - foot )   shark was spot at a fish marketplace in Taiwan , while an problematic shark not seen for decadeswas rediscoveredat a Mumbai fish market place just last year . In 2010,a new metal money of scallywag , which apparently sneezes when it rains , was discover by scientists in Myanmar , but not long before their specimen was eat by the locals who catch it .

It seems our love of all thing tasty can lead to exciting raw discoveries . Unless the specimen get eaten first , that is .
