tattle toSlashdot , Babylon 5 Lord J. Michael Straczynski delivers a thundering indictment of meshing execs ’ attitudes to science fiction on telecasting :
The problem is that the connection still do n’t take SF seriously , or even feel threatened by it . I ’ve had executive say that a space - show does n’t act because people do n’t care about what materialise to characters in space , it has to be on earth or nobody’ll be concerned . I ’ve had them say “ you’re able to do whatever you want , it ’s scifi , it does n’t have to make sense . ” Because it ’s SF they always think that somehow or other The Fate Of The World has to be at stake . If you ’re doing a drama , no one advise that work the human relationship job of the murder has to save the reality , but they feel that it has to be that path if you ’re writing SF , which is why it ’s also so often the dominion in SF movies . It ’s absolutely crazy - making . 2001 , one of the most definitive SF motion painting of all time , could never get made today . Not a fortune . Too cerebral , they ’d say . Not enough activeness . All the crowdsourcing in the man wo n’t rewire the nerve cell hire in that kind of thinking .
I keep expect for a image shift to happen that will let electronic internet and studio execs see that SF is the same as any other genre in terms of how you approach it – logically , character based , with gainsay ideas and forward thinking – but I interest that it might never happen in my lifetime .
