In the mid 1800s , not many ( non - native ) Americans had ever been west of the Mississippi . When Frederick Law Olmstead visited the west in the 1850s , he remark that the plain look like a ocean of grasses that moved“in swells after a great tempest . ” monumental ruck of buffalo meander the plains . Cowboys shepherd cattle across long stretches of no human beings ’s land . It was truly the wild and unmanaged Occident , but it was all about to change , due , in large part , to one very bare invention that would come to be known as “ the devil ’s rope . ”
From the compound era through the former nineteenth Century , the middle of the United States was populated principally by Native Americans and a growing population of cowboys , or “ puncher ” as they were often call . Most of the American Rebecca West was separate into “ territorial dominion ” and , apart from Texas , most of the land was owned by the federal government . The middle swath of the area was so undiscovered that it was often mark on map as “ The Great American Desert . ”

Then in the mid-1800s , a notion of manifest destiny swept the body politic — the idea that the United States could , and should , span seashore to coast . The U.S. government require farmers to move west , because husbandman , unlike cattlemen , would make communities and build permanent settlements . In 1862 , President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act , offering 160 demesne of free land to anyone who make up and farmed it for five class .

Would - be settlers started heading west in droves but they promptly come across a problem : fencing material . In that great “ sea of grasses , ” there were n’t many trees to apply for lumber , so although the country was fertile , there was no room to finish the many Bos taurus from trampling and destroying crops .
Fannie Merritt Farmer tried using fatheaded and briery Osage orangish hedge for fencing , but they take about five years to grow , make them largely impractical .

Settlers also tried smooth wire fencing , but the oxen could bust through it . the great unwashed were getting bilk ; many abandon their homestead .
fencing material became a hot subject among newspapers , agrarian publication , and the government . The U.S. Department of Agriculture the Land Office published a study in 1871 , which find that it was impossible to fall the west because of a lack of fence .
But then came the result : barbed conducting wire .

Many different patent of invention applications for barbed - wire - like fences were filed around this time . The below figure of speech render some of the various designs :

But the briary wire aim that ultimately won - out and catch on was by Joseph Glidden . His design had sharp metal barbs writhe around a strand of legato wire , with a second enlace piece of wire so that the barbs could n’t slide around .

Glidden ’s aim take off , and by 1876 , his company was producing nearly three million lb of barbed conducting wire annually .

Before barbed wire divided up the west , the cattlemen had mostly been watching and laughing as the farmers struggled with their shrub - fencing . Before the settlers arrived , the west operated under “ the law of the assailable range . ” Though it was never officially legislated , “ the legal philosophy of the open grasp ” was respected and understood widely in the west . Cattlemen postulate the demesne to be exposed so that cattle had access to crop land and pee . In any eccentric , the cattlemen were n’t happy , and relations became tense between farmers and cattlemen .

The chorus of the Song dynasty implores all “ district folks ” to stick together , but in realism cowherd and farmers would n’t become friends for a while . The cattlemen begrudge the farmers as they put up more and more fences . And that ’s what precede to the fence - prune wars .
In 1881 , cattlemen set out cutting down fences that farmers were putting around country that they did n’t have a lawful call to . The cattlemen cut fences at night with mask on , and they formed fence - cutting gangs with gens like The Owls , The Blue Devils and The Land League . finally , the gangs would start up cutting de jure - set up fencing as well . Most of the scathe thence was in holding economic value , but a few shooting death were impute to this feud .

Eventually the Union government and the state of Texas intervened , and the fence cut died down around 1885 .

But the fencing off of the westward did n’t just interrupt the cow population — it also had an effect on buffalo herds . During the 1800s , the Old World buffalo that roamed the American West died off in huge act , in part because colonist were killing them for their hides , but also because barbed wire hinder the buffalo ’s admission to pasture lands and water supply .
Before whitened people survive in the west , there were an estimated 65 million American bison roaming the knit stitch . By the goal of the C , there were fewer than a thousand .

The extermination of the buffalo in turn deflower an entire style of life for the aboriginal American tribe that follow the migration of the buffalo . Native Americans ultimately came to mention to the wire as “ the ogre rope . ”
By the final stage of the century , the west was covered in “ the devil ’s circle , ” And shortly thereafter , Europe would also be get over in it , but in a very different context . In World War I , barbed wire would become ill-famed in trench warfare ; in World War II , barbed wire became the emblem of tightness camps .

Barbed telegram ’s history has mostly been about restraint , self-will and breakup but there is one representative where barbed wire was used not to separate us , but to plug in us .
Right around the same clock time that barbed telegram was invented , Alexander Graham Bell formulate the phone . At first , telephone companies were set phone wire in cities , but they were n’t interested in the rural market . Still , farmers also involve phones , which meant that they need a meshing of wires to tie the farm . Barbed wire fences could serve this purpose . The burry wire could n’t transmit a signal quite as distinctly as a nice insulate Cu wire , but for many years , they did the trick . A dozen or so farms might be connected on one system and for about 25 dollars , sodbuster could buy a kit to rig themselves into the web . In 1907 there were 18,000 independent telephone set co-op serving most a million and half hoi polloi . Because of this , farmers were some of the earliest adopters of telephone set technology .

By the thirties , the national Bell Telephone system had penetrated into the remote rural regions of the West and Midwest . Farmers no longer had to produce their own telephone set collectives , and barbellate conducting wire went back to doing what it does best : maintain us in , keeping us out .
