Jeopardy ! has n’t been a stranger to pass over Star Trek before , but Tuesday ’s episode might take the dirty money for hiding , in patent sight , one of the coolest The Next Generation reference book we ’ve ever seen on the show .
Viewers pointed out that the 2nd round of Jeopardy included two categories that , by themselves , were n’t all that conspicuous . One was covering Shaka , the Zulu king and conquerer . The other was about warfare and conquest . However , when their power combined , they took on a whole fresh significance … one that seemed tailor - made for diehard Star Trek fan .
Almost …

await for it …
BOOM!
“ Shaka , when the walls fall ” is a reference book to Star Trek : The Next contemporaries ’s season 5 episode “ Darmok . ” The episode , a favourite of fans and critics alike , is about Captain Jean - Luc Picard con to communicate with an exotic raceway called the Children of Tama , who speak an allegorical language incompatible with Starfleet ’s general transcriber . The episodebrilliantly tacklesdifferences in language and thought , and the power of pity and reason .
By the goal of the sequence , as shown below , Picard make do to tell the Children of Tama ( in their conformation of spoken language ) that he and Tamarian chieftain Dathon successfully establish communication — although Dathon ended up losing his life in the process . It was recorded in Tamarian chronicle as the story of “ Picard and Dathon at El - Adrel , ” a will to their hard work and cooperation .
It ’s ill-defined whether this was an knowing addition on part of the show , or something a writer or producer snuck in for fellow Star Trek fan . We ’ve reached out to Sony for clarification , and to give whoever made the reference a mellow five . Truly , all we can say is : “ Temba . His arms open . ”
