After 2.5 days without overseas telegram television I decided it was time to come back . Why ? There were a number of understanding , which you may say abouthere . Now that I ’m back , though , I regret it . Honestly , what the perdition is going on ?

My first founding to cable television did n’t come until college , but since then it was always a nice - to - have luxury , and one that I was willing to pay for because the content was worth it to me . When I contract back up after my hiatus , I envision that would still be the display case , or at least that it would be easy enough to find the diamonds in the rough . I ’m begin to think I made a HUGE mistake .
The lack of decent programming is defective enough , and obviously your gasoline mileage will vary calculate on penchant . But good god it ’s dim out there , a landscape painting littered with realism television bozos and hapless half-wit and just … ugh . But the show are n’t the worst part . require to know what really chaps my bum , burns my biscuits , funks up my gravy ? The menus .
Decades after mammoth satellite cup of tea were cluttering up yards , and cable television get its first visual interfaces , TV is still Inferno to pilot with a basic set - top boxful . The sheer number of channel would be paralyzing enough . As a reposeful ocean of zero - agency white noise , sure , a legion of channels to zoom along through still has appealingness . But who has the time to just channelise breakers through a bunch of unreadable , unnavigable , unforgiving horseshit menus ? Answer : No one .
And let ’s not forget the actual controller . They fellate . A mint . There ’s a reason why we can use our mobile devices as remote control now . Look at Roku or Apple TV , for instance . They both allow you to seek for content using the on - screen keyboard , which can be thwarting to couple , but works just fine most of the time . In demarcation , with your cable TV remote , you ’re relegated to the d - pad . If you are n’t confused by this , you should be .
I ’ve notice that the well-off way to navigate the maelstrom is by using mobile apps . Seriously . Think about it : We ’ve all grown accustomed to mobile UIs . They ’re visceral unlike their dinosaur twin . You just scroll , water tap or eccentric and voila ! When you see at the Netflix , Hulu , or the HBO GO app , you know exactly what to do . There ’s no confusion . Zero clutter . Just pure viewing bliss .
But we can do better than just apps and websites . When Google TV was announced back in 2010 , I thought it was the most amazing thing to happen to video in quite some time . In theory at least . Most of us jazz what we need to watch , so it ’s just a subject of searching for it . You might not Google thing all day like me , but you know how to search for thing . GTV offered a path to bypass every cable sic - top box menu and just get full-strength to the content . Whether it ’s a difference with capacity provider , like HBO , or sorry hardware , like theCo - Star , GTV has been ill executed from the top - down .
Perhaps that ’s the logical thinking behindApple ’s late acquirement of Matcha.tv , a picture discovery tool that simply tells you where you’re able to watch what you ’re searching for . Apple does have a track phonograph record of rehashing others ’ services that work like crap , but there ’s precedent here . More and more , source - agnostic hunting is becoming standard in on - demand , from Xbox 360 to the Wii U to thelatest TiVo , universal search is taking grip . add together in live tv set would be a nice move for Apple . But there ’s no placed timeline as to when Apple plan to follow up the service into current Apple TV computer software , or even how . digit interbreed that it will come soon , and that it will be adept .
As for the future of my TV watch experience ? I intend I ’ve made a solemn error . I ’m watching even less content than before . One thing is for sure though , I do n’t see myself pay for cable beyond this MotoGP time of year . In fact , I may just end it now ; Fox Sports 1 ’s coverage of MotoGP is like watch a monkey make love a football . I signed back up for cable’s length to catch more stuff — not to ruin the clobber I already look on .
