Some people have a go at it Guillermo del Toro ’s mediaeval confection Crimson Peak . Some mass found it unsatisfying . But the overall consensus seems to be that Crimson Peak not only was n’t chilling , but did n’t have a tortuous enough plot line . But maybe everybody missed the huge twist at the remainder of the film ?
Huge spoilers ahead …
The basic game of Crimson Peak is , indeed , very simple . Edith Cushing ( Mia Wasikowska ) marries Thomas Sharpe ( Tom Hiddleston ) and go to survive in his decaying crime syndicate mansion in bleakest blighty , a place where even the ground bleeds . But soon Edith pull in she ’s made a mistake . Thomas and his sister Lucille ( Jessica Chastain ) have murder all of Thomas ’ previous wives , and she ’s next . The patch is basically Edith surviving , along with Thomas having a slender variety of sum .

The big foundation in Crimson Peak , other thanits insane visuals , is how it uses the supernatural . The pic is full of ghost , but they ’re entirely benevolent — or at least , they ’re entirely on Edith ’s side . Edith , from puerility , has had the power to see wraith , including her own dead mother , and when she make to Allerdale Hall , she ’s capable to see all of the ghosts in the business firm , including Thomas and Lucille ’s mother , but also all of their victims .

It ’s Edith ’s unequaled ability to see spectre that relieve her from being Lucille ’s next dupe . If it was n’t for the ghosts warning her and pointing her to clues , she ’d be doomed . That ’s the assumption of the picture : shade can spare your life .

That ’s not the twirl I ’m talking about , though . The construction I ’m denote to comes at the very final stage of the movie . Lucille is struggle Edith in the coke outside Allerdale Hall … and then Lucille sees the wraith of her bushed pal Thomas .
This is the first time anybody other than Edith has seen a ghost in the film . It ’s also the second that Lucille is doom — just as she ’s face with the fact that she ’s killed her brother / lover . The fact that Lucille is suddenly able to see a ghost , for what is likely the first clip , proves that something has changed for her , and that she ’s now open to something that she was n’t open to before . likely , this is the first ghost in the house that Lucille has really had sorrow about .
Part of why I like that ending , and why I mean of it as a eddy , is that it ’s open to a turn of interpretations . Either the spirit world is finally claim Lucille , after having intrigue against her throughout the entire movie , or Lucille is lastly undetermined to the terrible specter that she ’s been ignoring her whole spirit until now . Or Lucille is only able to see her brother because he ’s her pal , and she actually feels something about his death .

This is n’t quite a whirl on the point of “ Bruce Willis was all in the whole sentence , ” but it is a change at the end of the movie that plow everything sidelong . Lucille and Edith , at the very ending of the movie , finally have something in common . And seeing a ghost is the prelude to Lucille herself becoming one .
As Tasha Robinson wrote in io9 last week , the subject of Crimson Peak , as with other Guillermo del Toro films , is get away from the past . In the case of Thomas and Lucille , they ’re trapped with this terrible old house that ’s the literal shape of history and its claims on them . Their schemes to keep marrying and killing young women are a dire attempt to move ahead in spitefulness of all the dead weight they ’re tied to , so that Thomas can build his awe-inspiring new machine . Edith survives because she has a greater sensitivity to the past ( in spite of come from America , the land of Newness ) than Thomas and Lucille do .
When Lucille finally project a ghost , it ’s like a piece of the past she ca n’t simply dismiss ( as she does her dead female parent ) . It ’s the ultimate wry punishment , and a brilliant comeuppance . But it ’s also a hefty moment , because it ’s a sudden modification in the way thing have worked in the motion-picture show up to now . Crimson Peak does n’t have a big secret or a cagy reveal at its heart — alternatively , it has something saturnine and perhaps even more fascinating .
