Bo ’s “ serve an unhappy person ” arc this week was too loose , and too dependent on coincidences . It seems the writers are more interested in sharpen on the show ’s secondary character — who are n’t on the nose riveting , but still more challenging than our superpowered lady friend .
“ Origin ” was riddle with missed opportunities , and it feels like a step rearward for the show . After the last episode , which added tons of nuance to Winter and Skouras ’ relationship , I had hoped that this episode , which flashbacks on Bo ’s female parent , would shed light on their backstory . The show even twit us in the recap with Winter ’s channel , “ The past is a tricky place . ” Hooray ! Complication ! A story of two valet and their love for humanity clashing with their philosophical differences !
But when we finally see the two men together , there is little emotion to their backstory . rather , we ’re give with a serial of fact : Skouras discovered Bo ’s female parent Nina , a powerful telepath , and lend her into Project Orchestra while she was pregnant ; Skouras hired Winter to work with Nina and tried to assure her that her telepathy was a gift ; Skouras showed off Nina ’s ability to some Department of Defense bigwigs ; Nina eventually split up down from using her power ; and Nina made Winter promise to look after Bo if she could n’t do it herself . It ’s all a number by - the - telephone number and does n’t reveal anything about the characters themselves , except perhaps offering a undecomposed picture of Skouras ’ ties to the military . Last episode gave us teary-eyed - eyed speech about what ’s best for Bo , 1 that made us wonder the various characters and their motive , while this episode gave us mere events .

In fact , the most interesting thing bechance to our secondary theatrical role are pass in the present . It ’s cool to see that Skouras and Winter are able to meet on neutral district ; Delroy Lindo and Kyle MacLachlan do a nice job of conveying a sort of aweary regard , a sense that each world think he can change the other ’s mind . Plus , Winter ’s forces are starting to crack ; suddenly , Team Winter is n’t so proud of about the risks its members have taken on and are starting to doubt whether keeping Bo on the move is worthwhile . The FBI team is proving the most sport to watch , though . They are smart , up to , and totally onboard with the paranormal parameter of search for Bo . There ’s a toll logic gate that went green without payment ? Check the cameras and there ’s Bo doing her psychic Bo affair . There is something incredibly satisfying about these FBI phratry being so good at their jobs .
With the instalment so focused on telling Bo ’s lineage story , there was n’t much room for Bo and Tate themselves . Bo encounters a woman who became separated from her boy after flee their place body politic , and Tate just so happens to slip a necklace that the woman ’s Logos gave her and that son just so pass off to work at a pawn shop in Manhattan . When Tate points out that this was all room too commodious , Bo mitt curl it aside with the old “ There are no coincidences ” shtick . Sigh . I can get onboard with Believe as a largely feel - near show — the wandering fugitive format lends itself well to flying , happy ending — but make our fille work for it a little bit . Give the audience something to bewilder and accent over beyond whether Tate and Bo are going to get caught .
That ’s not to say that there were n’t some skillful detail . Shohreh Aghdashloo was underused as the cold and right grieving female parent . And I care the barren secure house Winter set Bo and Tate up in — and that all the employment he did to set Tate up with a fake identity run up in smoke because the papers did n’t quite burn off up . I almost bid , though , that Bo was compelled to play Santa ’s slight helper because she ’s so blase ; there was n’t even a book to read in there . On the other hand , Bo refusing to mount down the ravel because Tate was angry with her felt like a consistent , lifelike weakness for an empath , one that hold some promise for former episode . Plus , it ’s groovy that Tate got himself arrested again , because it would be ludicrous to have a wanted fugitive gallivanting around New York with his cheek splashed across every television band if there was n’t some kind of consequence . Although , it leaves me as perplexed as ever as to why Winter made Tate Bo ’s PCP .

But I do n’t get Bo , or what use she serves in this narrative . The show has run to not bad length to assure us that Bo is the central graphic symbol and not some MacGuffin for more powerful ( and , let ’s front it , more interesting ) forces . However , her patch electric arc are n’t challenging , and it ’s unvoiced to say where this avatar of human decency has room to spring up . Even the newly revealed crinkle — that she may “ demean ” with continued use of her abilities — is introduced outside of the episode ’s Bo - Tate plot line . Believe either needs to double down on Bo and give her something interesting to do , or step back from the “ healing of the hebdomad ” stories in favour of fleshing out the difference over Bo .
I am connive by the promo for next episode , in which Bo ’s compulsion towards helpfulness gets in the way of her flight from the authorities . That ’s a tension that I can buy within the world of Believe , and it ’s one worth search .
