For the first clip ever , planetary scientists have create a topographic map of Titan , the largest of Saturn ’s many Moon , and the secondly - largest in the entire solar system . The map is a boon to investigator who study Titan , amysterious moonthat is arguably themost Earth - like body in our solar system – and it ’s beautiful , too .

Via JPL :
“ Titan has so much interesting activity – like feed liquid and moving Baroness Dudevant dunes – but to empathize these operation it ’s useful to know how the terrain splatter , ” sound out Ralph Lorenz , a fellow member of the Cassini microwave radar squad based at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory , Laurel , Md. , who precede the map - design team . “ It ’s especially helpful to those canvass hydrology and model Titan ’s climate and weather , who need to know whether there is high ground or low ground drive their models . ”
Titan ’s thick haze scatter light in ways that make it very hard for remote cameras to “ see ” landscape shapes and shadows , the common approach to measuring topography on worldwide bodies . Virtually all the datum we have on Titan comes from NASA ’s Saturn - orb Cassini space vehicle , which has flown past the moon about 100 times over the preceding tenner . On many of those flybys , Cassini has used a radar imager , which can peer through the daze , and the radar data can be used to estimate the surface height .

“ With this new topographical function , one of the most fascinating and dynamic earthly concern in our solar system now pops out in 3 - D , ” aver Steve Wall , the surrogate squad lead of Cassini ’s radar team , based at NASA ’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena , Calif. “ On Earth , rivers , volcanoes and even weather are closely refer to heights of aerofoil – we ’re now eager to see what we can discover from them on Titan . ”
