Motorola released a pretty interesting raw fitness twist yesterday . It ’s called theMotoACTV , and it tracks your workouts , calories burn , and heart rate . It looks wondrous ! But it ’s not going to shave any pounds off that jiggling soma of yours .

If you see back , just ten eld ago , nub rate monitors were still comparatively exotic and expensive . They did n’t wreak well . Today , they ’re almost ubiquitous . The affair that , say , aPolar RS800can do — likeRR variance heart pace tracking — were the exclusive state of cardiology labs in the recent yesteryear . Or take heart pace - base kilogram calorie counting . Two year ago it was an impressive exclusion . Today , it ’s a board stake for any high - character fitness equipment . Things are changing , and fast . We are in the thick of a fitness gadget gyration .

This revolution has led to a relentless cycle of Modern physical fitness gadgetry . Garmin , Nike , Polar , Suunto , and Timex are pumping out fresh must - have devices every year . And because anyone that can cobble together a motion sensor and a GUI can now rove out a fitness tracker , upstarts like Fitbit and Jawbone — and now Motorola — are muscle in on the market too . ( It ’s worth remark that just a few short years ago Garmin was an parvenu itself . )
These are all game by advertising and promotions and splashy eyecandy package that call if you just wear this thing , fitness will be fun , fun , fun ! And easy ! Our thing will make you lean and salubrious and not such a fattie !
That is a lie . Or at least , misleading .

As evidence , I bid up myself . I have an intact drawerfull of fitness gimmick that I ’ve collected over the years . I ’ve spent thousands of dollars on them all severalize . ( And this does n’t even count freehanded ticket stuff like my bikes . I ’m strictly verbalize about things with computing equipment in them . ) I have more fitness apps on my phone than I do songs , no kidding . And I ’ve get an account on fundamentally every physical fitness - tracking website that I ’ve ever add up across .
I ’m 25 pound heavy ; all my jeans are wet - fitting penny-pinching jeans . I ’ve never bought a pair of tight-fitting jeans .
That was n’t always the pillowcase . I used to be a stolon , a natator , a biker , and hiker . I ’ve compete in more races and triathlons than I can count . In that same drawer that holds all my fitness gadgets , I ’ve also get several lb worth of finisher ’s ribbon . But those are bygones . I ’ve gone from triathlete to fattie daddy in no time at all . It ’s easy to do .

But you jazz what ? Just as gadgets wo n’t make you slight , and software program wo n’t make you set , technology is a prick that you may utilize to help attain those goals . Some of it is awing . Some of it is garbage — or a thoroughgoing waste of clip and money . Would n’t it be nice to have sex which was which ?
Sometimes all you ask is motivation and a wrist watch . I ca n’t do anything about the latter , but maybe I can avail with the former .

I ’m go to post my vital stats each week : weight , body mass index , percentage of body fat and rest heart rate . But that ’s not the good part either .
The good part is that you ’re going to join me . We ’re go to do this together . Holding hands . Tentatively , at first . We ’re break down to take baby steps ( because , real talk : long pace would result me roll ) . It ’s choke to be a journey that by the new yr leads to less of you , and less of me too . We ’re going to bring home the bacon avenues for you to send where you are , and what kind of progress you ’ve made . ( For starters , the Fitmodo assembly . ) We ’re going to set goals , and dash them . And we ’re run short to have fun .
