When Google+ launch , it was exciting ! A new Facebook ! good ! Purrrty ! But then everyone blank out about it . common people at Google forgot too . Last night , Steve Yegge , a Google engineer , accidentally posted a ranting about Google to his public Google+ visibility . It ’s reveal and absolutely rips Google+ . It ’s also rightful .
Yegge covers a bunch of topics , mostly focusing on how Google just simply does n’t empathise platforms . He praise Microsoft , Apple , Amazon and even Facebook for “ getting it ” when it comes to platforms , how farsighted term ontogenesis in a ware want that merchandise to be a program for others to develop more products on . But he thinks Google just does n’t understand how to do that . Yegge wrote :
Google+ is a prize example of our complete failure to understand platform from the very highest levels of executive leadership ( hi Larry , Sergey , Eric , Vic , howdy howdy ) down to the very lowest leafage worker ( hey yo ) . We all do n’t get it . The Golden Rule of platform is that you use up Your Own Dogfood . The Google+ platform is a ridiculous afterthought . We had no API at all at launching , and last I check into , we had one measly API call .
He goes on about how Facebook dispatch Google+ as a platform :
Google+ is a knee - jerk reaction , a subject area in short - terminus thought process , predicated on the incorrect feeling that Facebook is successful because they work up a great product . But that ’s not why they are successful . Facebook is successful because they built an entire constellation of ware by allowing other hoi polloi to do the work . So Facebook is dissimilar for everyone . Some hoi polloi spend all their time on Mafia Wars . Some drop all their time on Farmville . There are C or maybe thousands of unlike high - quality clip sump usable , so there ’s something there for everyone .
Our Google+ team submit a flavour at the aftermarket and said : “ Gosh , it looks like we need some games . Let ’s go contract someone to , um , compose some game for us . ” Do you start to see how fabulously wrong that thought process is now ?
And he ’s totally right . We do n’t thinkGoogle+ will ever beat Facebook . Never , ever , ever . But Google call for to take this advice and acquire from it . Learn from mistakes like Google TV . Learn from success like Android . teach from bizarreness like Wave . Learn it all ! And then perhaps they can compete ( or do something else ) .
