To say thatGuillermo del Toro ’s Pinocchiois unlike any Pinocchio story you ’ve ever visit seems fairly obvious . Going by del Toro ’s former work , it ’s also pretty obvious to assume the movie is darker and more messed up than previous dark and messed - up version of the story have been . What might be less obvious , however , is how well del Toro balances new story threads and sour mental imagery with that crucial idea thathas proceed Pinocchio relevant for over100 eld — the sexual love between a parent and a child — and how much harder it lands in this film because of his take .

Guillermo del Toro ’s Pinocchioarrives on Netflix today ( stream it here ) and it ’s aim by both the Oscar success as well as Mark Gustafson from a screenplay by del Toro and Patrick McHale . This way , claim away , this is not just a Guillermo del Toro pic . The trademark fashion and vibe he made famous with film like Pan ’s Labyrinth , Hellboy , and The Shape of Water can be felt throughout , though . That ’s in large part due to the fact this adaptation of Pinocchio is toldwith stop - motion liveliness , giving it a tactile , lived - in , stick out - apart feel even the best of the other adaptations ca n’t touch .

In the grand scheme of things , this Pinocchio has all the big story beats of the Pinocchios we know and have intercourse ( or hate ) . A teller and friend of the role , Sebastian J. Cricket ( Ewan McGregor ) , tells the taradiddle of a woodworker named Geppetto ( David Bradley ) who creates a marionette named Pinocchio ( Gregory Mann ) which is magically fetch to animation . Pinocchio is then exploited by a carnival doer , here name Count Volpe ( Christoph Waltz ) , and when Geppetto cash in one’s chips to find him , gets swallowed by a gargantuan hulk . That ’s all in there and more .

At almost every single turn of events though , del Toro dives deep into the motivating of these bighearted , well - known moments , bestow context , clarity , and even some surprises . For good example , the cause why Geppetto makes Pinocchio is he lost his young Logos , Carlo , in a bombing . Pinocchio also pop off multiple times and visits an afterlife where he learns he ’s actually immortal , but at a toll . Oh , and all of this is set against fascist Italy of the thirties where Mussolini is even a character . Yeah , squat gets pretty acute .

But along the way , del Toro and his squad never lose deal of the core ideas , wander them in and out of the moving-picture show . Pinocchio is not just a unseasoned boy , he ’s a completely clean slate . So his vantage point on the world and discoveries of life ’s trivial pleasures always band true and give some levity to the fell world around him . There ’s also that heartwarming love between a parent and kid , which makes some of the hardship the character weather feel more manageable . If anything , the biggest publication with Pinocchio is that the middle of the flick loses a bit of that Libra the Scales as Pinocchio kick the bucket off on his dangerous undertaking with Volpe . However , as the film arrive at its ratiocination , everything focuses back up , paying off with a heartwrenching conclusion that encompasses not just the ending you know , but takes things in an unforgettable and stalk direction . The big businessman of the ending is only reach because of the agency the film explores the world and characters wish never before .

Along the way , characters vocalize by incredible actors such as Tilda Swinton , Ron Perlman , Finn Wolfhard , Cate Blanchett , John Turturro , and Tim Blake Nelson give Pinocchio ’s journey an extra level of gravitas . It ’s the lead though , Gregory Mann , who really steals the show . His voice is utterly suited to a Pinocchio like this , because it ’s so innocent and worshipful , it makes everything happening to the character somehow darker by comparability . He ’s the voice prosopopoeia of the film itself .

Pinocchio and Geppetto

Blending incredible give up - movement animation and top - snick voice work with a surprising twisting on a tried - and - reliable fib , Guillermo del Toro ’s Pinocchio is a victor . It might not be the Lucy Stone - cold chef-d’oeuvre we ’ve come to expect every time del Toro stimulate behind a camera , but it ’ll be a movie audience of all ages hold in their hearts for age to come .
