I started listening to The Beach Boys when I was about five class one-time . They inform my gustatory sensation in music to this very day . But like most thing we loved in puerility , I lose raceway of The Beach Boys . Nearly forgot them . Then I get a line this track by a DJ and manufacturer name Bullion , and it took me mightily back .
This song , “ Long Promised , ” samples almost entirely from “ Long Promised Road , ” a song recorded by The Beach Boys in 1971 . Here ’s the song in its original class , for your credit :
It ’s one of my favourite Beach Boys songs — moody , a touch melancholic , but with a chorus line that intermit through like the hot California sunshine .
I ’ve probably listened to this Sung about a bazillion time , but then , for whatever ground , my tastes moved on . I started digging into different hooey . It happens , y’know ? Then , sometime this week , I was poking around some weird corner of the internet and I happened upon what Bullion did with this birdcall .
It was a revelation . I ’m hesitant to call Bullion ’s version a remix , because that word makes me cringe whenever I hear it . Any dense aspirer DJ can take a strain , tweak the pace ever so slightly , add a thunking bass drum , and call it a remix . This ai n’t that .
To my pinna , Bullion took all the shiny and unique parts of The Beach Boys ’ original and rearrange them masterfully . They ’re still familiar , but they ’re work around in a way that stimulate you look at them as if for the first sentence . It ’s like force back toward the star sign you grew up in from the opposite end of the street : Everything is immediately placeable , but you ’re ram to re - examine all the familiar details you either drop or ignored .
Bullion is a hard cat to come by these days . He ’s give up a few EPs ( one of which , a tour through The Beach Boys ’ Pet Sounds in the style of J Dilla , I’ve rise wide - eyed about bef0re ) , but you wo n’t find his stuff at the top of the stand at Wal - Mart .
I ’ll never meet the guy , probably . But if I do , I ’ll have to give thanks him . He made me remember some of my favorite songs that I ’d nearly forgotten . Bullion , you ’re as good as gold . [ iTunes ]
