The inventor of the World Wide Web has ride into battle for , what might be , the last chance to preserve an unresolved Internet in Europe .
Briton Tim Berners - Lee has assemble together nearly half a million online voices to guide European regulators in their advice for the European Union ’s ( EU ) laws on net neutrality and to not favour big patronage .
The Body of European Regulators of Electronic Communications ( BEREC ) has to develop a draft exercise set of guidelines , which the EU will use to inform their legal philosophy and legislating on how the net is regulated . The BEREC had a four - day official consultancy period between July 14 and 18 , during which Tim Berners - Lee launched a last effort to urge European regulator to support the workaday Internet user and not “ spelunk into telecommunication carriers ’ manipulative tactics . ”

Along with lawyer Professor Barbara van Schewick and Professor Larry Lessig , Tim Berners - Lee wrotean open letterto European regulator on Thursday , published by the World Wide Web Foundation .
In the letter , they wrote : “ We – the average users of the net – do n’t have expensive lobbyist . But we have millions of people – everyday Europeans , startups , investor , humble business enterprise , activists , NGOs , bloggers , self-governing creative person – who have experienced the great power of the open Internet first hired hand and want to protect it . ”
The varsity letter conclude : “ The Internet has become the vital infrastructure of our time – for our daily life , for our thriftiness , for our commonwealth . stiff guidelines will protect the futurity of competitor , invention , and creative expression in Europe , enhancing Europe ’s ability to lead in the digital economy . They will ensure that every European , no matter the color of their skin or the size of their notecase , has an equal chance to introduce , compete , speak , organize , and connect online . ”
The BEREC ’s public consultation point finish on Monday , July 18 . But within the four day of the official consultation period , 476,752 hoi polloi and over90 entrepreneursresponded to the open varsity letter by signing a orison onsavetheinternet.euurging regulators to close loopholes and preserve nett neutrality across the EU .
The EU Regulationcurrently contains set of regulation that aim to maintain that everyone can have complimentary admission to any other point in time on the Internet without discrimination . However , many advocates of net neutrality argue there are loopholes that can be exploited to favour grownup patronage . Berners - Lee ’s open letter also emphasize this , articulate that net regulators threaten to sacrifice the public ’s admittance to the open entanglement because they cower to the big telecom companies who have a vested interestingness . Not only does this jeopardize the rule of the open World Wide Web , it also has the very actual potential difference to hinder start - ups , small business enterprise , bloggers , artists , and activists .
For example , under current regulations , telecommunication ship’s company can provide “ fast lanes ” for some websites for a sum of money . Additionally , they could impose “ class - based dealings ” , whereby telecom party could separate against which traffic has their connective sped up or slow down down , disregardless of how engorged the dealings is .
The BEREC will process the response from the letter and put out a final set of guideline on August 30 , 2016 . you may stay tuned to the conversation using the hashtags # savetheinternet and # netneutrality on Twitter .
