After PEOPLE exclusively revealed that Harlow is the celebrity featured in this year’sDoritos Super Bowl 2023 commercial— the brand dropped the full ad, which sees Harlow quit rapping to play the triangle. His costar in the commercial, Missy Elliott, tries to talk him out of it during the ad, but in real life, Elliott was nothing but supportive, says Harlow.

“It was my first time meeting her and it was a complete honor and she was a huge reason that this was a no-brainer for me,” Harlow tells PEOPLE of Elliott. “I cherished the moment I got to spend with her. The time we spent was incredible. They gave us the room for a little bit. I really got to sit and talk with her for 10, 15 minutes just ask questions I wanted to ask. I mean, it was huge to me.”

In terms of his music career, Elliott told Harlow to “make what you like, don’t overthink, don’t try to make something to please the masses,” Harlow recalls. “And her results show the benefits of that.”

The Doritos Super Bowl commercial follows Harlow’s journey as a triangle player, all the way to an awards show where Harlow loses “triangle player of the year” to Elton John. “What?” a disgruntled Harlow mumbles to himself as John makes his cameo on stage.

“I like how sharp the humor is,” Harlow says of the ad. “I like how fresh it feels. It doesn’t feel like some old brand that doesn’t understand how to connect with the youth. As a hip hop artist, everything I’m doing is so youth-driven and it’s about being young and fun and forward-thinking and it feels like Doritos is on that same page.”

“Is it true about the love triangle?” one photographer asks Harlow.

“Maybe,” he responds while clutching a Doritos chip, which is in the shape of a triangle.

The Doritos commercial will air during Super Bowl LVII, which takes place on Feb. 12 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Harlow plans to watch it in his home state of Kentucky. “I’ll probably have family and friends over. Probably have a big party just to watch and sit back and enjoy it,” he says.

“You can’t think about the Super Bowl without thinking about Doritos – over the years, the brand has become a staple of gameday both on-screen and on snack tables at home,” Stacy Taffet, senior vice president of brand marketing at Frito-Lay North America said in a statement.
