PMC/Billboard Music Awards

In light of the K-pop group’s upcoming performance at theBillboard Music Awards, where they arenominated for four awards, they opened up about their rise to international stardom since their debut one year ago.

Members Danielle, Haerin, Hanni, Hyein and Minji “never imagined” that their music would reach fans on an “international level.”

“I remember when we first debuted and how the ‘Hype Boy’ challenge was a trend for a little bit. To see people from overseas who knew about us or not, dancing to ‘Hype Boy’ was so surreal and definitely not expected,” Hanni, 19, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

She adds, “This goes for ‘OMG’ as well. To have those challenges or clips of people dancing to ‘OMG’ was something we really enjoyed watching and naturally felt a lot of love and support.”

Since their debut in July 2022, the K-pop group have made an effort to “repay the love and attention” they’ve received from fans.

Minji, 19, adds, “I’m practicing more to showcase better music and performances. I believe that embracing new challenges and changes requires continual effort, and that trying out various styles is important for personal growth.”

Of their upcoming performance at the Billboard Music Awards, airing live on BBMAs.watch, the girl group says fans can expect “a newly transformed style from NewJeans.” They will perform their singles “Super Shy” and “OMG.”

“We’ve prepared a choreography that makes each member stand out, along with outfits that capture our individual characters,” Minji says, adding “Please look forward to it!”

Meanwhile, the nominations had the singers in complete shock. (They are up for top global artist, top global K-pop artist, top K-pop album and twice for top global K-pop song.)

“When we all first heard this news together for the first time, we all reacted like ‘Is it really us??,” says Hyein, 15.

Danielle, 18, revealed what fans can expect in 2024: “Looking back at 2023, I feel every year to come is going to be another new and exciting adventure!! I believe 2024 will be another year of growth, new experiences and new music,” she says. “I am looking forward to meeting more Bunnies from around the world!!”
